I’d met Elizabeth and Jeff a year prior for a photo session outside of Seaforth, Nova Scotia. It was a wild mix of sun, wind, angry clouds and the odd shower. Quintessential Nova Scotia. Months later we found ourselves along the coast again - this time on the opposite side of Halifax and facing similar weather. Champagne bottles and umbrellas in hand, a small group of immediate family followed them along the Polly Cove trail.

And then we reached it - a small peak with unobstructed views of Dover Island and beyond. The perfect spot for a ceremony. The perfect spot to huddle in close. The perfect spot to exchange vows and wed.

A Haliburton Hotel Wedding

The courtyard at Haliburton Hotel is an oasis that every Halifax wedding photographer should have an opportunity to document. Removed from the traffic of Barrington and Morris Streets and sheltered by a canopy of green leaves, it presents itself as the perfect spot for a small, intimate wedding. It was an honour to have been there for Jen & Amy, an honour to have watched them walk into the courtyard together and an honour to have watched the beaming smiles of those in attendance. These two have shared much already and the joy conveyed by all on that summer afternoon is a good indication that more great things are to come.

I've been fortunate to have documented a number of backyard weddings in recent years (and more are on the way!). The 5th of July epitomized what I've come to enjoy about these celebrations. There is a focus on simplicity and immediacy - the day itself is stripped down to the core components of a wedding celebration. Those in attendance are able enjoy the company of others in a location that generally holds a fair amount of significance for the married couple. Photographically speaking, these can be very rich events for a photographer. From details to smiling faces, from laughter to tears. This is what I want to document - this is where I'd like to be.
